Herbert - Regional Advisory Group (RAG)
Australian Agriculture Minister Warren Truss has appointed
prominent regional identities to serve on the Herbert regional
advisory group (RAG), as part of the Sugar Industry Reform
Program (SIRP), launched in April 2004. The group plays a
key role in implementing the Australian Government's $444
million Sugar Industry Reform Program.
The RAG identifies and develops local responses to local
challenges - responses that reflect the special circumstances
affecting the Herbert region. The group also works closely
with the Industry Oversight Group to help identify the priorities
for wider industry reform, and to develop a strategic vision
for the Australian sugar industry.
The members of the Herbert Regional Advisory Group appointed
in 2004 are:
- Cr Sherry Kaurila – Chairperson
- Roy Pace – Grower
- Steve Guazzo – Grower
- Mayor Pino Giandomenico – Community
- Gavin Hughes – Miller
- Ian Davies – Miller
- Piera Delroy – Business
- James McLellan – Environment
- Greg Shannon – Independent
RAG members are selected for their expertise and experience,
as well as their enthusiasm for the future of the sugar industry.
Throughout 2004, the RAG worked to produce a regional plan,
with an economic, social and environmental blueprint for sugar
cane production. It is vital that the RAG captures and presents
the vision for the regional industry’s economic and
sustainable future.
The RAG also plays an important role in assessing project
proposals for funding under the SIRP's three-year, $75 million
Regional and Community Projects component. This funding will
back local projects that encourage restructuring and enhance
industry sustainability.
